Two things separate a confident player from a guessing one: knowing which hand wins at showdown, and knowing which hands are worth playing before the flop. Both are below.

Hand rankings, strongest to weakest

Position matters as much as the cards themselves: a hand worth raising on the button is often a fold three seats earlier. Stack depth, table aggression, and how many players have already entered the pot should all adjust the chart above — treat it as a starting point for new players, not a rulebook.

There is no mathematical guarantee to win every single poker hand, but you can drastically increase your long-term win rate through strategic decision-making. In poker (especially Texas Hold'em), the players who win are those who make mathematically correct choices and exploit their opponents' mistakes.
Here are the most important winning strategies, divided into the preparation phase (fundamental concepts) and the execution phase (at the table).

1. The Preparation Phase: Fundamental Concepts
You need to internalize these concepts before the first cards are even dealt:

• Understand Positional Play: Your position at the table is your biggest advantage. When you are "in position" (acting last), you have full information on what your opponents did before you. Play more hands in late positions (like the Button) and significantly fewer, high-strength hands in early positions (right after the blinds).
• Strict Starting Hand Selection (Tight-Aggressive Style): The most common mistake beginners make is playing too many hands. Successful players are "tight" (they only play the top 15–20% of starting hands) and "aggressive" (when they do play, they bet and raise rather than just calling).
• Bankroll Management: Never play with money you cannot afford to lose. As a rule of thumb, you should have at least 20 to 30 full buy-ins for your specific limit in cash games, and up to 100 buy-ins for tournaments. This protects you from natural statistical swings (variance).

2. The Execution Phase: On-Table Tactics
Once the game is underway, you should actively adapt your strategy:
• Calculate Pot Odds and Outs: Base your decisions on math, not gut feelings.
• Outs: Count the remaining cards in the deck that can improve your hand.
• Pot Odds: Compare the mathematical ratio of the current pot size to the required bet against your chances of winning. If the risk is smaller than the mathematical reward, you call; otherwise, you fold.
• Observe and Classify Opponents: Pay close attention to your opponents' betting patterns. Group them into basic categories:
• Passive Calling Stations: They call often but rarely raise. You should bet big against them when you have a strong hand (value betting) and rarely attempt to bluff.
• Maniacs: They constantly bet and raise with almost any cards. Let these players run into your strong hands.
• Aggression Over Passivity (Putting Pressure on Opponents): If you only "call", you can only win the pot by having the best hand at showdown. When you "bet" or "raise", you have two ways to win: you can have the best hand, or your opponent folds and gives up the pot without a fight (fold equity).
• Strategic Bluffing: Bluffs need to tell a credible story. Do not bluff just because you "feel like it." Instead, bluff when the community cards (the board) line up perfectly with a strong hand you want to represent, and your opponent is showing weakness.
