Two things separate a confident player from a guessing one: knowing which hand wins at showdown, and knowing which hands are worth playing before the flop. Both are below.

Hand rankings, strongest to weakest

Royal Flush — A, K, Q, J, 10, one suit
Straight Flush — five in a row, one suit
Four of a Kind — four cards of the same rank
Full House — three of a kind plus a pair
Flush — five cards of one suit, any order
Straight — five in a row, mixed suits
Three of a Kind — three cards of the same rank
Two Pair — two separate pairs
One Pair — two cards of the same rank
High Card — no pair or better; highest card plays
